The Alhambra, dinner and theatre

two weeks ago i tried to take natalie to see a snow white show on stage at the alhambra theatre. the alhambra is mostly known for their evening shows where you dine and afterwards watch the show on stage. but this particular snow white show was a shorter, matinee type of show, no food was served and it was only $8 a ticket (compared to over $40). natalie just LOVES snow white and i thought it would be some good mother/daughter time for us as well.

so i made the arrangements for someone to watch russell, and natalie and i headed out to the theatre. when we arrived, there was a line of people waiting along the side of the building. i wasn't too worried because i expected some school camps to be there. when we finally got to the check-in desk after very patiently waiting in line for about 15 min., i was told that the show had been sold out--long before i even stepped into the line. apparently i should have bought the tickets online but i did not even think of doing that. well, there were others who were in the same boat as us and they were waiting around to see if some people did not show up to buy their seats. we waiting until the show started and some seats did become available but there were people ahead of us who got them. i was finally told there was nothing else they could do and it was then that i had to break the news to my sweet natalie, who wasn't aware of all the chaos surrounding us.

both natalie and russell take disappointment pretty well. i have tried my best to raise them knowing that they can't always get what they want, and when something changes, or plans fall through, i always explained that it would be okay without trying to make it up to them in another way. life is full of disappointments, whether we like it or not!

with that being said, this was an exception. natalie had her little sweet heart set on seeing this show ever since i heard it was on stage and told her about it. the morning of the show, she wanted to dress like snow white (we didn't have a snow white dress but she wore a red and white shirt and a yellow skirt), put on her snow white headband and ruby red shoes, and then she made sure to bring her snow white doll. she had a huge smile on her face the whole drive there. this time, it was different.

so, i turned natalie around to walk out of the theatre and tell her what happened. she didn't really understand why the show was "sold out" and we couldn't go in. my heart sank as she started to cry, and then i just let myself cry with her. we got in the car and her quiet little sobs just broke my heart. i had to do something else fun with her. this was not how our mother-daughter time together should end.

we ended up renting 3 princess movies that she picked out from blockbuster and then eating lunch at mcdonalds (her pick after i practically begged her to choose a place. she just wanted to go home.)

in the end, i could tell that natalie was very happy with how her day turned out. she's such a trooper. i can't help but feel blessed to have such amazing kids!

at mcdonald's:

the following week (last wednesday), we went to see Cinderella at the Alhambra with my mom and sister. this was something that my mom had really wanted to do for natalie when they announced the show would be coming. last year we all went to see Annie and it was such a nice "girls out" experience for us, we wanted to do it again.

needless to say, natalie was really, really excited about the show and we all had a wonderful night.

we asked natalie to smile big, and this is what she gave us :)
she really enjoyed reading and looking at the program

i must say, i think i redeemed my self!

thanks mom and celena for such a special night!

our adventures with dylan, the conclusion

we tried to keep dylan entertained as much as possible while he was here. (key word "tried")

unfortunately, i think he probably spent more time hanging out at the house with me and kids than anything else...

however, i don't think that bothered him too much.

the things we DID end up doing probably made up for all the down time and i know he had fun while he was here.

Along with the previously documented activities (movies, trips to the mall and our family cookouts), we also...

-went to st. augustine

-went to the beach

-went to the MOSH museum

-went to Adventure Landing (boys night with russ and cousin ryan)

-went camping IN (poor natalie was sick and they weren't able to actually sleep outside like planned)

-had game night

-rented some horribly scary movie called The Fourth Kind (per his request) (we had to all sleep in the living room that night and i was still too scared to fall asleep)

-worked on our 2,000 piece puzzle of The Last Supper (after getting overwhelmed and ignoring it for awhile, dylan's interest in it gave me the motivation to want to finish it -- we are almost there thanks to him!)

so, i know it sounds like a lot, but there really was a lot of down town in between all of that!

here are some pictures...

how we spent our Independence Day

yes, i realize that the 4th of july was TWO WEEKS AGO, but please bear with me as i attempt to catch up on the blog :-)

the cookout we had for independence day was actually on a saturday, so on sunday, july 4th we took the kids to see TOY STORY 3. we had been anticipating the release of this movie for several months -- and by "we" i truly mean all four of us, not just natalie & russell!

being someone who tries to avoid crowds and chaos as much as possible, i don't know why i thought it would be a good idea to see a movie on a HOLIDAY. since toy story 3 was already out for a couple of weeks or so, maybe i thought we'd be okay... well, it didn't work out how i had planned. in fact, we got there about 15 min. before showing time only to find out that the time we wanted to see was sold out. devestated, i looked over at natalie with her jesse doll in hand, and russell with his woody doll in hand, and when the clerk asked me if i wanted to purchase tickets for the next show, i couldn't help but say YES. instead of going home, we sort of camped out at the theater and waited for the prior showing to end so we could be the first onese in and claim good seats. i think we waited for over an hour, but the kids didn't seem to mind and for some reason (maybe i'm the only one who thinks this), it seemed like time went by pretty fast.

it turned out to be totally worth the wait. toy story 3 was everything we expected and more and if we can't see it again while it's out in theaters, we'll definitely be adding this movie to our collection when it comes out on DVD.

on the way to the movies!

{waiting}

after spending so much [unanticipated] time at the movies, we didn't really feel like doing much that night. we got out the sparklers and watched the kids have fun with them on the driveway. little russell wasn't really into it, all he cared about was riding his bike. but natalie had fun entertaining herself (and us) as she ran around the driveway shaking the sparkler. i think she thought if she ran away the "fire" wouldn't be near her, even though she never let go of the sparkler... like i said, it was entertaining :)

celebrating independence day!

my parents invited everyone over to their house for a july 4th cookout. it wasn't as hot as the last cookout, and the screened in porch made the bugs much more tolerable too. the kids had fun on the playground, the boys played badmitton and horseshoes, and then after we ate, we brought the party inside for some dancing and karaoke! because you know a Soto party isn't complete without music...HEEEY!
